Evolutionary dynamics of the algae:
Understanding adaptive potential under environmental change

This project investigates the evolution of ecological niches and trace metal utilization in marine algae. It integrates knowledge and techniques from physiology, oceanography, molecular biology and statistical modeling to characterize evolutionary processes related to algal function in the biological pump and adaptability to environmental change. Studying the evolutionary adaptability to changing environments and the effect of environment on diversification will yield insight into algal responses to climate change. Understanding the evolution of trace metal utilization yields insight into how algae have adapted to changing trace metal availability historically and into their contemporary function as an oceanic sink for anthropogenic CO2.
